Stools of the decades

Alexander Lervik in the design program, Beckmans school, has made what I consider a fantastic graduation project. Curious about the next millennium, he looked backward to investigate how materials and form have developed during the 20th century. This led to ten stools, each inspired by a chair from each decade of the 20th century. The turn of the century is represented by a black-lacquered, angular Mackintosh-inspired stool. "Because Art Nouveau is over," Lervik notes. The 1910s stool is also austere, like a stylized wooden horse. Inspiration Gerrit Rietveld. The 1930s stool is naturally made of tubular steel and metal strips after Mies van der Rohe's soft forms. But also Alvar Aalto's. The 1990s reimagined stool of four plastic puzzle pieces is ingenious. It unites Alexander's own childhood Lego play with material-efficient, environmentally friendly, and simple design thinking. It would surprise me if Ikea does not have it in production next year!
