The young Swedish furniture designer Alexander Lervik has prepared for the coming century by thoroughly familiarizing himself with the styles of the 20th century.

Knowledge of the past is an excellent starting point for meeting the future. That is why cabinetmaker and design student Alexander Lervik chose his ambitious graduation project: To depict the 20th century through ten stools, one for each decade. After three years at Beckmans Designskola in Stockholm, he wanted to prepare for the next millennium by getting to know his predecessors in furniture design — and at the same time take the opportunity to play a little, before work and seriousness set in for real.

That the 27-year-old Swede has chosen to become a designer has probably surprised no one: When father is an engineer and mother is a sculptor, designer becomes the natural synthesis. The father is, by the way, Norwegian, but young Lervik has always lived in Stockholm. Before he started at design school, he spent two years in an apprenticeship as a cabinetmaker.

EMPATHY

The graduation preparations were thorough. For a whole year from the moment the idea was conceived, he read books, watched films, and visited museums to familiarize himself with the styles of each decade. He tried to put himself into the mindset of the various designers and understand how historical events have influenced design. Then he began to draw. And to look for manufacturers who could make the prototypes. A number of recognized Swedish furniture factories stepped up, presumably because they saw both humor and talent in Alexander Lervik's drawings.

— The stools are my personal interpretation of the spirit of the times in each era, the young designer emphasizes. He has drawn inspiration from great names such as Mackintosh, Rietveld, Le Corbusier, Breuer, Aalto, Mathsson, and Kjærholm, and from movements such as Bauhaus and Memphis.

TOWARD THE YEAR 2000

100 YEARS - 10 STOOLS

A whole century's stylistic movements, compressed into ten stools, one for each decade. Ten graceful little syntheses of the century's greatest design names. They have become bullseyes for a young Swedish designer who wanted to summarize his century before a new millennium. Now we can hope that furniture manufacturers will give us the opportunity to acquire these treasures.
