Lervik seems fascinated by the simplicity of light, and illumination plays a major role in his design. For example, he has attracted global attention for an illuminated swing as well as illuminated door handles and much more.

Here Lervik plays with the interplay of light and shadow. A star is formed when the candle is lit, growing as the candle burns.

LIVES IN THE LIGHT

Alexander Lervik has attracted great attention around the world for his design, where lighting more often than not plays a significant role.

Alexander Lervik was born in Stockholm in 1972. He trained as a cabinetmaker for two years and then studied interior design and product design at Beckmans School of Design for three years (1995–1998). His works are on display in various prestigious art and design museums in the Nordic countries. Although Lervik has designed numerous avant-garde lights, his company, Lervik Design, primarily focuses on product design and interior design. His works range all the way from nightclubs to textile design. What characterizes his work above all is that almost without exception there is a strong concept behind it. "I always try to add something to my design that suggests a concept or function that gives the design added weight," Lervik himself said not so long ago.

THE LIGHT SHOWS THE WAY

Lervik seems fascinated by the simplicity of light, and illumination plays a major role in his design. For example, he has attracted global attention for an illuminated swing, as well as illuminated door handles and much more. Lervik's philosophy on the importance of light is intriguing. "Light helps us see and has always fascinated humanity. A person who seeks to discover the truth behind the mysteries of life is often called enlightened or, as Kant put it, can use their own understanding without the guidance of others. Being enlightened therefore implies an assertive personality and has much in common with a person who refuses to follow in the footsteps of others. The remarkable thing is that the world would undoubtedly be much darker if not for these individuals—the pioneers. We can all agree that an era of light sounds much better than an era of darkness. We simply want to live in the light and let our light shine." The light tree is also one of Lervik's works for which he has received high praise. It is a tree made of steel and wrapped with 2,000 meters of optical plastic fibers. The trees can be used both indoors and outdoors, for example as street lighting to illuminate entire public squares. The trees can easily change color and come in many different sizes. Since the light trees first came onto the market, they have been seen around the world, for instance in all Ermenegildo Zegna stores, at the National Museum of Art in Oslo, and elsewhere.

SCANNED HIS OWN BRAIN

Lervik has often intertwined light and biology. In 2007, he launched his own brain in the form of a floor lamp. He had his brain scanned at the Karolinska hospital in Sweden and processed that scan via 3D printing, which then became a lampshade; now lucky admirers can purchase Lervik's brain, illuminating the darkest winter days. Of everything you have designed, what holds a special place in your heart? The Brighthandle door handle. After designing the handle and exhibiting it in Milan, I started a company around it and began production. Eventually, I sold the company to the largest lock manufacturer in the world, Assa Abloy.

Where do you see yourself in five years? Relaxed at a hotel bar in Hong Kong on a trip to find inspiration. I will probably work in a more international way than I do now, but I will still have a small company that allows me to work anywhere.

The best advice you have received... Everything is possible if you just believe!

Are you an early bird or a night owl? In the past, I was a complete early bird, but in the last two to three years I have become more of a night owl—I love sleeping in!

Favorite household item? The fireplace in the living room—enjoying life on dark winter evenings.

Which book changed your life? Any book that nudges me toward living in the present—not in the future!

Favorite designer or architect? There are so many! Grcic, Eames, Kjærholm, and others.

Favorite food? Authentic Chinese food, such as soup with dumplings.

What would the dream vacation be like? A mix of a city trip, skiing in the mountains, and relaxing in the sun on a tropical beach.

Favorite movie? Many of the Coen brothers' films are favorites, such as O Brother, Where Art Thou?

What superpowers would you like to have? In Sweden, there is a cartoon called Bamse. One of the characters is a turtle that can fall asleep whenever he wants. That would be my superpower: being able to choose when I fall asleep and how long I sleep. Just imagine—all boring flights and the like would be a thing of the past.
