"I was fascinated as soon as I stepped into Belid's factory in Varberg. I didn't know we had factories of that calibre left in Sweden. The lighting company was founded back in 1969, still has all its production in the original factory, and manufacturing-wise they are a goldmine. Up until our first collaboration, they had mostly worked with in-house designers, but I felt there was an opportunity to do something more. I wanted to take a holistic approach and collaborate with other designers to make it more interesting. It hasn't been completely easy. In a way it has been a bit of a meeting between two different worlds, and as such incredibly educational. Belid has managed to keep such competitive prices because they have a well-developed mindset around sales and product development, and that naturally affects what kind of products they produce. I felt that I wanted to gather a group of colleagues belonging to my generation, but with different commercial and experimental starting points. That would make the collection more interesting.

"I, Katja Pettersson, Broberg & Ridderstråle, Folkform and Johan Carpner started the collaboration by going down to Varberg to see the factory. For us, it was important to understand what can be done there and to think innovatively about products that suited them while still bringing something new. For them, the great challenge has been daring to create a series that might not always scream sales. We come from a side they are not used to working with. But I am convinced that this is brand-building for them and that in the long run it will affect all sales. Everyone has produced very different lighting. I have continued working on an existing collection called Notham and created a new graphic series. We call the series Contemporary Light Works."
