TEXT JOSEFIN UDEN

DESIGNER ALEXANDER LERVIK has over the past two years worked on an exhibition where he had fifteen prominent photographers around the world photograph fifteen of his chairs. The photographers were given free rein to create whatever they wanted, and the result was also gathered in a book. Among the photographers are Mary Ellen Mark, Martin Parr, Vee Spears, Lynn Goldsmith, Gunnar Smoliansky, Dawid, Annika von Hausswolff, and others.

— It started with me writing a letter to four Swedish photographers, saying that they were given a free hand to photograph any of my chairs in exchange for getting to keep the chair. Put it behind a container with only the legs sticking out if you like.

— I got all of them on board and started asking abroad as well. The result has been very diverse. I have deliberately chosen photographers from the worlds of fashion, music, as well as art.

In the book published by Arvinius förlag, the photographers are presented together with text about how important the image is for the launch of a product. Is it perhaps more important than the shape of the product itself?

— If you launch a product with the right image, almost regardless of what product it is, it can still be a hit. So what happens when the photographer gets to choose for themselves? It is 15 years since I graduated from Beckmans, so the project was named 15 stolar - 15 fotografer - 15 år. I think the pictures have turned out fantastic with great variety.

Opening reception and exhibition will take place in Alexander Lervik's studio in Stockholm together with Gallerie Kleerup, which is moving into the studio on 4 October.
