The Twine rug, here in the natural colorway, is made of undyed wool in light beige and gray tones.

Finely braided

A heroic effort three years ago led to a collaboration between designer Alexander Lervik and the family-owned rug company Ogeborg.

By MICHELLE MEADOWS

IT WAS WHEN Helene Ogeborg thanked designer Alexander Lervik over a glass of wine that the idea of a collaboration was born.

"Three years ago during London design week, Alexander came to our rescue when we couldn't manage to hang lamps over our stand, he fixed it immediately," says Helene.

Over drinks, Alexander quickly sketched a rug whose shape was inspired by braids. Unfortunately, sketch after sketch was classified as "impossible" by Ogeborg's factory staff in Portugal.

"Why don't you go down there, and it will work out," Helene suggested, and Alexander boarded a plane.

"It is so wonderful when you are on site and can understand the craft! Ogeborg's factory is the last that hand-weaves rugs in Europe and it is incredibly educational to walk around there and learn from the people who work there," says Alexander.

After the visit it was clearer to him what he could and should do, and today the Twine rug has a pattern that de facto resembles braids. In combination with the different wool yarns, it creates a lovely effect, and the rug, which comes in five different colorways, has completely different expressions depending on the color. A great detail — which came from that factory meeting — is the row of double-knotted fringes at the end of the rug and the finishing stripe in the same color as the fringes. A detail that gives the rug that little extra.

All colorways can be ordered in any size, up to five meters in width. The rugs are made to order and cost approximately 6,000 kronor per square meter.
