Scandinavian design speaks loud and clear: from the Great North, the novelties raise their voices and have their say when it comes to trends and avant-garde. The projects presented during the 2023 edition – on stage in the Swedish capital from February 6 to 12 –, in fact, blow together a breath of fresh air that from across the border stirs (even) the sunniest and most dormant South. In an attempt to redefine a new minimalism, which the spirit of the region seems unable to do without, partly by nature, partly by choice, the character of the new furnishings rethinks everyday objects starting from what is essential. The Bau modular system by Note for Lammhults

A sofa but also a simple floor armchair, the project dubbed Bau challenges the traditional canons of upholstered furniture by deconstructing its classic, more rigid and codified shapes, and disrupting its usually linear layout. Without giving up the functionalism most typical of Scandinavian modernism, the seating family also includes a resting surface that acts as a connector just like a small table, whose geometric angularity contrasts with the relaxed personality of the sofa.

Extended family. With a café chair, a lounge armchair, and a table, the Munch series designed by Andreas Engesvik and Jonas Stokke expands and changes its destination. Created for the new Edvard Munch Museum in Oslo, inaugurated in October 2021, the furniture collection under the Vestre brand has been redesigned to also adapt to domestic environments. Focusing, above all, on comfort, the sofas and seats now welcome wider and more generous armrests. The distinctive feature remains the reticular metal structure: "all stainless steel parts have been welded together, galvanized, and finally painted, without screws or other parts that can loosen," the designers emphasize. The Hemvist seating by Alexander Lervik in collaboration with Drömtrappor

Helén Pe Rediscovered craftsmanship. Manufactured in Norsjö, where Drömtrappor has been producing staircases since 1923, with wood sourced from local forests, Alexander Lervik's furniture is created from waste material from the manufacturing process. Presented in the spaces of Galleria Unikat, the Hemvist furniture makes use of artisanal techniques whose construction is based on the use of dowels and wedges.
