Play to learn: the new Woodnic challenge

The designer draws on Swedish artistic heritage and local craftsmanship to compose a set of chairs, benches, and tables, traveling just over 60 miles north of Gävle, at the same latitude as Skellefteå and in the middle of the Västerbottnian forests lies Norsjö. The company ‘Drömtrappor’ has existed here since 1922. ‘I remember the first time I visited the factory, it is the only time in my 25 years in the furniture industry that I got goosebumps seeing how the production is done. In front of me, furniture craftsmen worked with materials that mostly come from the forests outside the factory’. Following this sustainable design approach, the collection takes advantage of leftover wood produced from another project of the creator.

Alexander Lervik's original design forms a bleacher that focuses on the intricate details of the joining pieces and will be exhibited at the Stockholm Furniture Fair 2023. The leftover wood produced during the manufacture of the bleacher composition is reused in the construction of limited edition furniture, forming an armchair, a small table, and a bench.

The Hemvist furniture set applies a construction technique that uses pegs and wedges to join the wooden pieces. “In this furniture collection, I have simplified the shape to a graphic simplicity with a strong identity,” the designer shares.
