Stockholm Furniture Fair explores design, innovation and societal challenges in four exhibitions

This year's edition of Stockholm Furniture Fair offers four thought-provoking exhibitions examining current themes within design, innovation and society. Alexander Lervik creates a philosophical exploration of light and color, while Olsson Lyckefors takes us behind the scenes for an insight into the creative, architectural process. In Lund University's "Plastic Perspectives", visitors have the opportunity to explore plastic as a material, while "Italia Geniale," curated by ADI Design Museum, displays a large selection of iconic and contemporary Italian design.

This year's exhibitions at Stockholm Furniture Fair span a wide spectrum of subjects from innovative design to an exploration of societal issues and the creative process.

"Light Doesn’t Exist" by Alexander Lervik

In Alexander Lervik's exhibition, visitors get to explore the nature of light. What is light and how do we perceive it? "Light Doesn’t Exist" is a philosophical exhibition that strives to describe the different properties of light. In collaboration with Stockholm Lighting Company, Lervik has experimented with light and color and created four cubes where visitors can experience different aspects of daylight, darkness, reflection and color.

– There is really no light, it is a phenomenon that arises in the eye of the beholder, just as color only arises when the reflection from an object reaches the eye, says Lervik. Daylight is vital for us humans, while the existence of darkness is essential for us to be able to perceive light.

"Practice Unfiltered" by Olsson Lyckefors

With "Practice Unfiltered", the Swedish architecture firm Olsson Lyckefors takes visitors behind the scenes and provides a rare insight into the daily, unpolished reality of an architecture office. In a world where architecture is often presented as a perfect, finished product, they want to disrupt the narrative by showcasing early sketches, incomplete ideas and the many twists and turns that define a project's journey.

By sharing these raw and formative stages, Johan Olsson and Andreas Lyckefors hope to inspire a deeper understanding of the craft.

– Architecture is not a straight path; it is a journey full of challenges, surprises and discoveries. It is in these moments of uncertainty that real creativity and expertise are tested, which often leads to unexpected and remarkable results, the architects say.

The exhibition will be shown in a pavilion originally designed by Olsson Lyckefors for Papershell. For Stockholm Furniture Fair 2025, the pavilion has been rebuilt in close collaboration with Södra and Papershell with groundbreaking, sustainable materials such as CLT (cross-laminated timber) and prototypes of Papershell's facade panels. After the fair, the pavilion will embark on a new journey and be relocated to other sites.

"Plastic Perspectives" by Lund University

Despite its short history, plastic has come to play a central role in our modern society. Today, plastic is everywhere, from the oceans to outer space – and it is impossible to remove completely.

"Plastic Perspectives" asks critical questions about humanity's relationship with the material. The exhibition, curated by Julia Hertzman from Formprocess, examines bio-based raw materials, circular systems and the smart use of plastic. It presents works from ten designers and researchers who ask, through design, art and architecture, how, when and why the material should be used in the future.

The works are inspired by the research programme STEPS at Lund University (Sustainable Plastics and Transition Pathways). The project is funded by Formas and carried out in collaboration with researchers, Form/Design Center, Konstfack and Formprocess.

"Italia Geniale" by ADI Museum and the Italian Cultural Institute

"Italia Geniale" celebrates the enduring heritage and innovation of Italian design through historical classics and contemporary projects. The exhibition, which was shown for the first time at Dubai Expo 2021 and is now being reworked for Stockholm Furniture Fair, highlights Italian creativity and craftsmanship through five themes: mobility, health and well-being, imagination, relationships and work.

ADI Design Museum has curated the exhibition, which serves as a kind of manifesto for Italian industrial design. The museum houses the entire collection of Compasso d’Oro, a design award founded in 1954 by Gio Ponti to celebrate design made in Italy. From its collections, ADI has selected both iconic and contemporary objects, many of which have been awarded the prestigious prize.

More than 60 brands will be represented, with timeless works from Ferrari, Poltrona Frau, Flos, Artemide, and Olivetti, as well as groundbreaking innovations such as those from Arduino and Mogu. The exhibition is an initiative of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with the Italian Embassy in Stockholm, the Italian Cultural Institute in Stockholm and ITA (Italian Trade Agency).

In Älvsjö, programmatic work is underway to develop the area around Stockholmsmässan with housing, workplaces, sports, as well as a new metro line and other public transport. Urban development will begin in 2034 at the earliest, which means operations will continue in Älvsjö at least until 2035.

Stockholm Furniture Fair utforskar design, innovation och samhällsutmaningar i fyra utställningar

Årets upplaga av Stockholm Furniture Fair erbjuder fyra tankeväckande utställningar som undersöker aktuella teman inom design, innovation och samhälle. Alexander Lervik skapar ett filosofiskt utforskande av ljus och färg, medan Olsson Lyckefors tar oss bakom kulisserna för en inblick i den kreativa, arkitektoniska processen. I Lunds universitets "Plastic Perspectives" får besökare möjlighet att utforska plasten som material, medan "Italia Geniale," kurerad av ADI Design Museum, visar ett stort urval av ikonisk och nutida italiensk design.

Årets utställningar på Stockholm Furniture Fair spänner över ett brett spektrum av ämnen från innovativ design till ett utforskande av samhällsfrågor och den kreativa processen.

"Light Doesn’t Exist" av Alexander Lervik

I Alexander Lerviks utställning får besökarna utforska ljusets natur. Vad är ljus och hur uppfattar vi det? "Light Doesn’t Exist" är en filosofisk utställning som strävar efter att beskriva ljusets olika egenskaper. I samarbete med Stockholm Lighting Company har Lervik experimenterat med ljus och färg och skapat fyra kuber där besökare kan uppleva olika aspekter av dagsljus, mörker, reflektion och färg.

– Det finns egentligen inget ljus, det är ett fenomen som uppstår i betraktarens öga precis som att färg först uppstår när ögat nås av reflektionen från ett föremål, säger Lervik. Dagsljuset är livsviktigt för oss människor, samtidigt som mörkrets existens är avgörande för att vi ska kunna uppfatta ljuset.

"Practice Unfiltered" av Olsson Lyckefors

Med "Practice Unfiltered" tar det svenska arkitektkontoret Olsson Lyckefors besökarna bakom kulisserna och ger en sällsynt inblick i den dagliga, opolerade verkligheten på ett arkitektkontor. I en värld där arkitektur ofta presenteras som en perfekt, färdig produkt vill de störa narrativet genom att visa upp tidiga skisser, ofullständiga idéer och de många turer som definierar ett projekts resa.

Genom att dela dessa råa och formativa stadier hoppas Johan Olsson och Andreas Lyckefors kunna inspirera till en djupare förståelse för hantverket.

– Arkitektur är inte en rak väg; det är en resa full av utmaningar, överraskningar och upptäckter. Det är i dessa stunder av osäkerhet som verklig kreativitet och expertis sätts på prov, vilket ofta leder till oväntade och anmärkningsvärda resultat, säger arkitekterna.

Utställningen kommer att visas i en paviljong ursprungligen ritad av Olsson Lyckefors för Papershell. För Stockholm Furniture Fair 2025 har paviljongen återuppbyggts i nära samarbete med Södra och Papershell med banbrytande, hållbara material såsom CLT (cross-laminated timber) och prototyper av Papershells fasadpaneler. Efter mässan kommer paviljongen att påbörja en ny resa och omplaceras på andra platser.

"Plastic Perspectives" av Lunds universitet

Trots sin korta historia har plasten kommit att spela en central roll i vårt moderna samhälle. Idag finns plast överallt, från haven till yttre rymden – och den är omöjlig att ta bort helt.

"Plastic Perspectives" ställer kritiska frågor om människans relation till materialet. Utställningen, kurerad av Julia Hertzman från Formprocess, undersöker biobaserade råmaterial, cirkulära system och smart användning av plast. Den presenterar verk från tio designers och forskare som frågar, genom design, konst och arkitektur, hur, när och varför materialet bör användas i framtiden.

Verken är inspirerade av forskningsprogrammet STEPS vid Lunds universitet (Sustainable Plastics and Transition Pathways). Projektet är finansierat av Formas och genomförs i samarbete med forskare, Form/Design Center, Konstfack och Formprocess.

"Italia Geniale" av ADI Museum och Italienska Kulturinstitutet

"Italia Geniale" hyllar den italienska designens bestående arv och innovation genom historiska klassiker och samtida projekt. Utställningen, som visades för första gången på Dubai Expo 2021 och nu omarbetas för Stockholm Furniture Fair, belyser italiensk kreativitet och hantverk genom fem teman: rörlighet, hälsa och välbefinnande, fantasi, relationer och arbete.

ADI Design Museum har kurerat utställningen som fungerar som ett slags manifest för italiensk industridesign. Museet rymmer hela samlingen av Compasso d’Oro, ett designpris grundat 1954 av Gio Ponti för att hylla design gjord i Italien. Från sina samlingar har ADI valt ut både ikoniska och samtida objekt, varav många har tilldelats det prestigefyllda priset.

Mer än 60 varumärken kommer att representeras, med tidlösa verk från Ferrari, Poltrona Frau, Flos, Artemide, och Olivetti, samt banbrytande innovationer som de från Arduino och Mogu. Utställningen är ett initiativ av italienska utrikesdepartementet i samarbete med italienska ambassaden i Stockholm, italienska kulturinstitutet i Stockholm och ITA (Italian Trade Agency).

I Älvsjö pågår ett programarbete för att utveckla området kring Stockholmsmässan med bostäder, arbetsplatser, idrott samt ny tunnelbana och annan kollektivtrafik. Tidigast 2034 påbörjas stadsutvecklingen, vilket innebär att verksamheten fortsätter i Älvsjö åtminstone fram tills 2035.
